The Most Overlooked Room in Your Home? Your Laundry Room

You probably use it more often than your dining room. Yet when it comes to remodeling, the laundry room usually gets whatever space is left: a crowded corner, one shelf, and nowhere to put a basket.

September’s return to busy routines makes this a good time to rethink that setup. A thoughtfully planned laundry room can make one of your most repetitive chores feel a little less frustrating.

Start With What Slows You Down

Before choosing cabinets or paint colors, pay attention to your next load of laundry. Where do dirty clothes pile up? Where do you fold clean towels? Is detergent easy to reach?

These small frustrations can guide the remodel. If you carry everything to another room to fold, a dedicated countertop might be your priority. If supplies cover every surface, better storage may matter more.

The goal is to give each step a place.

Plan Around Your Appliances

A countertop above compatible front-loading machines can create a useful folding area. With top-loading models, a surface beside the appliances may be more practical.

Either way, measurements need to account for more than the machines themselves. Door openings, connections, manufacturer-required clearances, and access for maintenance all belong in the plan.

Think about your own movement, too. You should be able to open the dryer and unload it without moving three baskets first.

Make Storage Work Harder

A combination of closed cabinets and accessible shelves can keep the room organized without making everyday items difficult to reach.

Consider a tall compartment for a mop and ironing board, a designated spot for hampers, and a hanging rail for clothes that need to air-dry. Keep cleaning products safely stored away from children and pets.

Even a compact laundry area can feel more intentional when everything has a home.

Give the Room Some Personality

Practical spaces deserve thoughtful finishes. A warm cabinet color, coordinated hardware, and well-positioned lighting can make a laundry room feel like part of your home.

Choose surfaces with cleaning and everyday wear in mind, and address ventilation and any existing moisture issues during planning.
